Rev. Henning Dafel is a familiar face at Mukhanyo, where he lectures in Church History and Doctrine, subjects that resonate deeply with both his academic strengths and personal calling. “I love theology, and I love helping others to delve deeper into great truths,” he says. “Theological education is where God brought these two passions together for me.”
A Reformed Environment for Spiritual Growth
What he treasures most about teaching at Mukhanyo is the spiritually rich, confessionally Reformed environment. “It’s a place where we are free to worship in Spirit and in truth,” he reflects.
Mentoring students is central to Rev. Dafel’s approach, shaped by the four pastoral questions proposed by theologian Richard Osmer: What is going on? What ought to be going on? Why should it be so? What should change? These questions form a framework for listening, reading Scripture, interpreting it faithfully, and applying biblical truth.
His favourite Bible verse, Philippians 4:7, reminds him of the peace that surpasses all understanding, but only when read within its proper context. To foster spiritual growth, he encourages students to read Scripture regularly and often draws from the insight of godly men found in church history who lived out the truths they studied.
Theological Study Amid Modern Challenges
Rev. Dafel is deeply aware of the challenges theology students face today. Many juggle their studies with part-time work and active ministry responsibilities, leading to fatigue and discouragement. “Theological study demands full attention and commitment, yet many students are already stretched thin,” he explains.
He believes churches have a vital role to play. “Support begins with prayer, not just saying it, but doing it. Take an interest in the students around you and look for ways to invest in the future leaders of the church.”
When asked what has shaped his teaching most outside of Scripture, he cites the Reformed confessions and J.C. Ryle’s classic work, Holiness.
A Call for Prayer
How can we pray for him? “Please pray for wisdom and focus, and that God would provide for me and my family. Training future church leaders is a weighty calling. I rely daily on God’s grace.”
