The Potchefstroom Centre of Mukhanyo Theological College (MTC) officially commenced with first-year Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.) classes on 10 February 2026. This development follows the recent decision of the General Synod of the Reformed Churches in South Africa (GKSA) to designate Mukhanyo as an accredited study option for the training of its future ministers.
While MTC’s Higher Certificate programmes have been offered in Potchefstroom for more than a decade, the Potchefstroom Centre has, from this year onwards, been established as a dedicated centre for Reformed theological degree training. In this endeavour, MTC works in close collaboration with the Theological School Potchefstroom (TSP). The Centre is under the leadership of Professor Henk Stoker, who served as Rector of the TSP until the end of 2025. Professor Stoker brings with him extensive academic, ecclesiastical, and administrative experience, ensuring continuity in Reformed theological education, as well as a strong commitment to academic excellence and confessional faithfulness.
The Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.) degree in which first-year students have enrolled at MTC’s Potchefstroom Centre this year is a nationally accredited theological bachelor’s degree and is offered in both Afrikaans and English. Teaching is conducted by ecclesiastically called professors and approved lecturers—specialists in their respective fields.
Referring to the establishment of the Potchefstroom Centre, Dr Brian DeVries, Principal of Mukhanyo Theological College, stated: “We are deeply thankful for the trust placed in Mukhanyo by the GKSA. The establishment of the Potchefstroom Centre represents a significant step in strengthening Reformed theological education in South Africa. We aim to equip future ministers with a solid grounding in Scripture, a deep understanding of Reformed theology, and the character required for faithful and effective service in Christ’s church.”

Academic programme and first-semester modules
The Potchefstroom Centre is currently offering the Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.) programme. The first semester of the first year includes the following modules, each carrying 10 credits:
- Hebrew Introduction
- Greek Introduction
- Academic Literacy
- The Story of the Bible
- The Books of Moses (Pentateuch)
- Synoptic Gospels and Acts
- Introduction to Systematic Theology
An elective module in English Linguistics is available for students who intend to later also obtain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) through MTC.
These modules are designed to provide students with a strong foundation in Biblical languages, Scripture, Reformed theology, as well as academic literacy. The programme seeks to prepare students not only for further theological study, but also for the practical demands of ministry, including preaching, pastoral care, mission, apologetic witness, and teaching within the life of the church.
The establishment of the Potchefstroom Centre reflects a shared commitment between Mukhanyo Theological College, the GKSA, and the wider Reformed community to provide theological training that is academically credible, confessionally faithful, and spiritually grounded.
