Mukhanyo: The name that reflects our vision

The name of a theological institution often reveals its purpose, calling and identity. In the case of Mukhanyo Theological College, the very name “Mukhanyo” conveys a powerful theological vision. Derived from isiNdebele, the word means “light”, a fitting symbol for an institution committed to illuminating minds and hearts with the truth of God’s Word.

For Mukhanyo, this is not merely a poetic name; it is a theological statement. Dr. P.J. (Flip) Buys, first principal of Mukhanyo, envisioned a college that would not simply dispense information, but would shine the light of Christ in a context where biblical literacy and sound theological training were much needed.

Light in Scripture: A central biblical theme

The Bible repeatedly uses light as a key theme for God’s presence, truth and salvation. In Psalm 119:105 (ESV), the psalmist declares:

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Here, the psalmist emphasises how the Word of God provides direction and understanding in a world often clouded by moral confusion and spiritual darkness. Scripture does not only inform; it illuminates. This illumination is not passive but active, guiding believers step by step in faithful obedience.

Another foundational passage is John 8:12 (ESV), where Jesus proclaims:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Jesus identifies Himself as the source of true light. In choosing a name meaning “light”, Mukhanyo aligns its mission with Christ’s own declaration: to dispel spiritual darkness through life‑giving truth.

From language to legacy

While words like lucis in Latin have historically been used to speak of light in a philosophical or spiritual sense, the use of an African language (isiNdebele) for the college’s name roots its mission in a local cultural context that is both accessible and meaningful to its students.

The word “Mukhanyo” becomes more than a translation, it becomes a bridge between biblical theology and the living realities of Christians who live in Africa.
