When South African actor Muzi Mthabela enrolled at Mukhanyo Theological College, he knew it would not be an easy journey. Between a demanding acting career, public speaking engagements, and a full academic schedule, balancing everything required determination and discipline. Yet for Mthabela, studying theology was never simply about gaining another qualification, it was about deepening his faith and preparing to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.
Mthabela recently completed the Higher Certificate in Bible Teaching through Mukhanyo’s Johannesburg Local Learning Site, studying over the course of about a year and a half. His introduction to Mukhanyo came through one of his lecturers at another college, who recommended the institution to him. What immediately drew him to Mukhanyo was its reputation for being firmly grounded in Scripture.
His career in the entertainment industry spans many years and includes appearances in popular productions such as Isibaya, Imbewu: The Seed and Generations: The Legacy, and while many South Africans know him from the television screen, he has also worked as a video editor and motivational speaker, building a diverse career within the media industry.
Despite these professional commitments, Mthabela remained committed to his studies. Filming schedules often required him to be on set every day, making it difficult to attend classes during the week. However, he credits the lecturers at Mukhanyo for helping him persevere. When his work commitments prevented him from attending classes, they arranged opportunities for him to catch up. This support, he says, made a significant difference during challenging periods of study.
For Mthabela, theology is closely connected to his broader purpose. His passion lies in inspiring and guiding young people, particularly through school ministries. He hopes to visit schools, deliver motivational talks, pray with learners, and offer encouragement to students who are navigating the challenges of life.
His academic journey is far from over. Mthabela hopes to continue studying at Mukhanyo in the future, with the goal of completing a Bachelor of Theology and eventually pursuing doctoral studies, which he is hopeful will become available in Johannesburg, allowing him to continue his theological training while remaining active in his career.
Through his studies at Mukhanyo Theological College, Mthabela is preparing not only for the next chapter of his own journey, but also to encourage a new generation to pursue purpose, faith and direction in their lives.
