At 78 years old, Mrs Natshili Sophia Kabini, affectionately known as Gogo Sophy, proves that it is never too late to follow God’s calling. This inspiring grandmother from Mapotla village in KwaNdebele graduated in September 2025, after completing her theology studies through Mukhanyo Theological College’s Zulu Focus programme at Kameelrivier. Her story is one of remarkable courage, faith, and a deep desire to serve God more faithfully.
Her journey began when the leadership of her church, the Church of God (a Zionist congregation), recognised her gift for sharing the Word. She often served in the church and comforted grieving families, but she felt that she needed to understand the Bible more deeply to serve effectively. This prompted her to look for a Bible school, and when she heard about Mukhanyo’s local learning centre at Kameelrivier, she decided to enrol. What she initially thought would be a short course turned into a two-year journey that transformed her life. Even after graduating, she has continued studying further courses because she wants to keep learning.
Studying at her age came with challenges. Reading and finding Bible passages took her longer, and she sometimes struggled to keep up with the younger students. But rather than being discouraged, this became an opportunity to grow within a supportive community. Her classmates often helped her during group study sessions, and her tutors were patient and understanding, explaining concepts carefully and encouraging her along the way.
For Gogo Sophy, her time at Mukhanyo was a time of spiritual renewal and growth. Being able to sit under biblical teaching, ask questions, and explore Scripture in-depth has greatly enriched her understanding and strengthened her faith.
She also has a heartfelt message for others, especially younger students. She believes they should continue studying and prepare themselves to take up the work of the church. Having studied at her age, she hopes her example will show that no one is ever too old to learn.
Her achievement has already inspired many in her church community, who have been deeply impressed by her increased knowledge and confidence in teaching the Word. She plans to continue serving as long as she is able, using what she has learned to build up others in faith.
